Bordetella Vaccine For Cats: Uses, Doses, & Side Effects

The Bordetella vaccine is given to cats to help prevent the infectious Bordetella bronchiseptica respiratory disease. It works by injecting a tiny amount of the actual bacteria directly into the bloodstream of your cat. In turn, this causes the cat’s immune system to recognize Bordetella bronchiseptica and fight against it.

Your veterinarian can administer the vaccine to your cat; although, the decision about whether to go ahead with the vaccination depends a lot on your cat’s age and lifestyle.

Closely follow your vet’s instructions post-vaccination and watch out for signs of any adverse reactions. Here’s what you should know about the usage, dosage, and side effects of the Bordetella vaccine in cats.

Uses Of Bordetalla Vaccine For Cats

The Bordetella vaccine prevents cats from getting the Bordetella bronchiseptica disease. If not vaccinated, cats can start to show symptoms that include coughing, sneezing, a runny nose, and a fever.

Bordetella bronchiseptica is also highly contagious, meaning that it can very quickly spread from feline to feline, and even from dogs to cats.

The Bordetella vaccine is given as a live intranasal vaccine, which means the vaccine is squirted into the kitten’s nose. Vets recommended kittens older than 16 weeks of age receive one dose.

Younger cats are more likely to need the vaccine, especially if they live in a situation where they spend time around lots of other cats. Older cats, especially indoor cats who don’t come in contact with other felines or canines, often don’t get the Bordetella vaccine.

Side Effects Of Bordetella Vaccine For Cats

Once your cat receives the Bordetella vaccine, there’s a chance that your kitty might start to sneeze for a couple of days after the vaccine has been administered. A study by the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine has deduced that this is a standard and normal reaction.

Contact your vet if any other side effects begin to appear after your cat gets the vaccine.
