These days, it’s super easy to fill up your phone with trillions of photographs of your cat. Unfortunately, many of the photos people take of their kitties don’t exactly portray their felines in the most flattering fashion.
Maybe you’re looking to get your cat’s good side for your social media feed. Or maybe you need to compete with a certain someone who always pulls out their phone to show you baby pictures until you can’t stand to see another tiny human.
Whatever the case, you can always take some steps to up your cat-picture-taking game. You don’t even need a fancy camera to do it. You can just snap great photos with your phone!
Here are a few easy tips to start taking better camera phone pics of your cat.
Turn Off The Flash
The easiest way to take slicker-looking pictures of your cat is to turn off the flash on your camera phone. Using the flash increases the chances of your cat looking like something from a horror movie and also risks washing out the pic.
Instead, seek out locations around the home that use natural light — so by a window or patio door during the afternoon or early morning. The light might be a little too bright during mid-day, but an overcast day works well, too.
Experiment with taking pictures at different times to see what works best.
Reduce Background Clutter
Before you start snapping away, look to see what’s around your cat. You may think your kitty looks adorable in a particular photo, but if the background is filled with a pile of dirty laundry, unwashed dishes, or general domestic chaos, most peoples’ eyes are going to focus on that rather than your feline.
Seek out a plain background, like a clear wall or couch, and use that to best portray your cat.
If you want to get creative, you could even tape some colored paper to the wall to set up a temporary backdrop, but beware of busy designs or color schemes that will clash with your cat’s fur and markings.
Use Treats And Toys
Cats are oftentimes not exactly the most obedient of creatures. This is especially true if you’re trying to take photos of them.
Use the lure of favorite toys or treats to get your cat to look at the camera phone lens, and then start hitting that capture button. Hold the treat or toy in the direction you want your cat to face, and make sure to reward kitty for posing so nicely.
Get On Your Cat’s Level
Shooting pictures of your cat on their eye level will give you the most striking and natural looking portraits.
Pictures taken from above will inevitably end up with your cat looking up in every shot. Sometimes that’s what you’re going for, but try capturing their image at a more friendly angle.
Get down on your knees or lie on the floor next time you feel moved to photograph your feline. You’ll probably love the results!
Once you feel everything is set up for the perfect pic, shoot quickly! Cats are finicky creatures and it probably won’t be long before your beloved kitty decides to move on from your photo setup.
Never force your cat to stick around, either. If they say the photoshoot is over, wait a while before you try again.
